About the Scholarship Provider
AI for Science is a stream in AIMS South Africa’s Master’s degree in Mathematical Science, made possible through a partnership with Google DeepMind. The program sits at the intersection of AI and the sciences, designed for students passionate about mathematics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
This fully residential, one-year taught Master’s program includes a research component open to students from across Africa. Google DeepMind funds 40 students annually for four years, starting September 2023.
Scholars benefit from mentorship and support from Google DeepMind researchers and engineers, along with partnerships with world-class local institutions such as the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO), South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI), and the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA).
Eligibility Requirements for AIMS Google DeepMind Scholarship
To be eligible to apply for the AI for Science program, applicants must:
- Be a resident in Africa at the time of application*
- Be a citizen of any country in Africa.
- Have completed a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with an honors year by August 2025 (or December 2025 for southern African applicants)
- I not have held a previous scholarship to study at an AIMS center.
- Have an undergraduate degree in Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, or any other discipline with a strong computational and mathematical component.
How to Apply for AIMS Google DeepMind Scholarship
Applications and selection will happen in two rounds:
Online Selection Round
Register at apply.aims.ac.za and upload the following documents before 11:59 PM on 21 March 2025:
- Curriculum vitae
- Motivation letter (around 500 words)
- Academic transcripts
- Written mathematics questions (to be found on the application site)
- Coding problem (to be found on the application site)
The online application includes a dozen short mathematics questions and one coding problem. It’s not an exam, but the questions give the selection panel insight into how you approach problems.
A full application can’t be completed at the last minute, and prospective Google DeepMind Scholars at AIMS South Africa are encouraged to apply early.

Interviews
Short online interviews will take place in May 2025 as the final selection round.
Forty students will be selected for the 2025 intake and supported at AIMS with a complete Google DeepMind scholarship.
