Funding Amount: Covers registration fees, tuition fees, accommodation (R65,000 for residence or R47,000 for private accommodation), books, a laptop, and a living allowance for off-campus/private accommodation.

About the Bursary Provider

The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) is a branch of the Gauteng Department of Education, responsible for skill development within the province. 

GCRA supports students through bursaries, internships, learnerships, and career guidance programs.

GCRA Bursary Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a South African citizen.
  2. Be between 18 and 35 years old.
  3. Reside within the Gauteng province.
  4. Have completed Matric in Gauteng.
  5. Be accepted or registered for an Undergraduate or Postgraduate qualification in 2025.
  6. Be accepted to study at an accredited South African PSET institution (public or private Higher Education Institutions, TVET colleges, private colleges, Community Education and Training colleges, or skills development providers).
  7. Preference will be given to students pursuing studies in GGT2030 priority sectors: Art and Design, Finance, Economics and Accounting, Electrical Infrastructure Construction, Civil Engineering Construction, Hospitality Management, IT and Computer Science, Mechanical Automotive, Diesel Engineering, Tourism, Transport, and Logistics.

Students who meet the following criteria automatically qualify (but must still apply):

  • Top achievers at a Gauteng-based school.
  • Top 3 learners from a no-fee-paying Gauteng-based school.
  • Top 3 learners from Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Gauteng-based school.

How to Apply for the GCRA Bursary 

Applications must be submitted online at GCRA Bursary Application 2025

Applicants must first register an account before logging in to apply.

  1. Step 1: Complete the Personal Profile section, including personal information, Matric results, and guardian details.
  2. Step 2: Provide tertiary institution details, and sponsor information, upload supporting documents, and agree to the terms and conditions.

Bursary Types:

  • New Intake: First-time applicants.
  • Renewal: Previously funded students reapplying.
  • Reinstatement: Students whose bursary was suspended and are reapplying.
  • Top Achievers: Top performers in Gauteng.
  • No-fee School Top 3: Top 3 students from no-fee-paying schools.
  • LSEN Top 3: Top 3 students from LSEN schools.
  • MEC/HOD Discretion: Candidates recommended by the MEC/HOD.
  • Veteran Discretion: Children of military veterans.
  • Financial Assistance: Students requiring financial aid.
  • Top Ups: Students with an existing bursary needing additional funding.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit certified copies of:

  • ID document.
  • Matric certificate.
  • Most recent academic record (if currently studying).
  • Proof of registration/acceptance from a recognized institution.
  • Proof of residence in Gauteng (utility bill, ward councilor letter, or traditional authority letter for rural areas).
  • Motivational letter (maximum 2 pages).
  • Disability/medical report (if applicable).
  • Parent/guardian proof of income (latest payslip or affidavit).
  • Proof of any other bursaries received (if applicable).

Ensure documents are labeled correctly, saved in PDF format, and are no larger than 2MB each.
