About the Bursary Provider
The Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) is responsible for implementing skills development programs that support local government employees, individuals working within local government structures, and unemployed citizens.
LGSETA operates under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and is one of 21 SETAs in South Africa.
For 2024, LGSETA is awarding 650 bursaries through the Discretionary Grants Bursary 1st Funding Window.
The bursary covers undergraduate and postgraduate studies in various disciplines essential to the local government sector.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for the bursary:
- Must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident.
- Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric.
- Must be studying or intending to study full-time in one of the approved qualifications.
- The qualification must be accredited on the NQF/N Levels.
- Must have passed the previous year’s studies if currently studying.
- Must be studying or accepted/provisionally accepted at a recognized South African tertiary institution (University, University of Technology, or TVET Institution – NATED programs).
- Must be unemployed.
- Must not be receiving any other bursary funding (the bursary will be withdrawn if another bursary award is received).

The following supporting documents must be uploaded (certified copies, not older than six months):
- Completed Learner Registration Form for Unemployed Individuals (.pdf).
- Certified copy of ID document.
- Matric latest results (if currently in Matric).
- Matric certificate (if completed Matric).
- Most recent academic records (if currently studying).
- Last year’s academic tertiary results (if a continuing student).
- Proof of registration/acceptance (on institution’s letterhead).
- Proof of unemployment (affidavit).
- Parents or guardians’ proof of income (latest payslips if employed, proof of pension, or SASSA grant if applicable).
