Funding Amount:

  • Military Veteran Dependents Bursary: Covers registration, tuition, residence, meals, and books (up to R100,000).
  • Unemployed Youth with Disabilities Bursary: Covers registration, tuition, residence, meals, and books. May also cover tuition, venues, and catering for skills programs.

About the Bursary Provider 

The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDOE) aims to improve education by providing financial help to students residing in the Eastern Cape province. 

The ECDOE Bursary 2025 works to support unemployed youth, dependents of military veterans, and students with disabilities who wish to further their studies.

  1. Military Veteran Dependents Bursary

This bursary is available for unemployed youth who are dependents of military veterans. It covers any field of study at a public Higher Education Institution in South Africa.

  1. Unemployed Youth with Disabilities Bursary

This bursary is for unemployed youth with disabilities who were former students of ECDoE Special Schools. Eligible study programs include:

  • Art (Music, Ceramic Designs, Fine Arts)
  • Assistant Chef Programme
  • Auto Body and Painting
  • Beadmaking
  • Boiler Making
  • Dress Making
  • Hair Dressing
  • Handyman Program (Tiling, Plastering, Bricklaying, Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting)
  • Holistic Massage and Beauty
  1. PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) Bursary

This bursary is for unemployed youth who wish to pursue a career in teaching. It covers PGCE studies in FET Phase, specializing in:

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Life Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
  • Geography
  • Technical Subjects
  1. B Ed (Bachelor of Education) Bursary

This bursary supports students pursuing a Bachelor of Education (B Ed) degree in:

  • Foundation Phase (Grades R – 3)
    • English, Afrikaans, IsiXhosa, Sesotho
    • Mathematics, Braille, SASL
    • Neurodevelopmental Needs, Remedial Teaching
  • Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 – 6)
    • English, Afrikaans, IsiXhosa, Sesotho
    • Mathematics, Braille, SASL
    • Natural Sciences & Technology, Neurodevelopmental Needs, Remedial Teaching
  • Senior/FET Phase (Grades 7 – 12)
    • Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences
    • Technical and Agricultural subjects
    • Languages (English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Braille, SASL)
    • Information Technology, Maritime Studies, and Visual Arts

ECDOE Bursary Eligibility Criteria

You must meet the following minimum requirements:

Military Veteran Dependents Bursary

  • Must be a dependent of a military veteran
  • South African citizen residing in the Eastern Cape
  • Aged between 18 and 35 years
  • Unemployed and studying/intending to study at a public Higher Education Institution

Unemployed Youth with Disabilities Bursary

  • Must be living with a disability
  • Former ECDoE Special School learner
  • South African citizen residing in the Eastern Cape
  • Aged between 18 and 45 years
  • Unemployed and studying/intending to study in the specified fields

PGCE Bursary

  • South African citizen residing in the Eastern Cape
  • Aged between 18 and 35 years
  • Unemployed and studying towards a PGCE qualification with at least two teaching subjects

B Ed Bursary

  • South African citizen residing in the Eastern Cape
  • Aged between 18 and 35 years
  • Unemployed and studying towards a B Ed qualification in the specified fields

Application Process for the ECDOE Bursary

Applicants must submit certified copies of the following documents:

  1. South African ID
  2. Matric results (if currently in Matric) or Matric certificate
  3. Full academic record (if already studying)
  4. Any other relevant qualifications (if applicable)
  5. Proof of acceptance at a public Higher Education Institution
  6. Proof of disability (if applicable)
  7. Proof of military veteran dependency (if applicable)
